Math and Reading/Language are very important.
The amount of time spent on subjects in grade school should be altered. I think that math and reading/language are the most important subjects. In addition, I feel that more time should be concentrated on those subjects than any other subject. Students should not get the same amount of time everyday in history and science as what they receive in math and reading/language. It is not that I feel that history and science are not important but that the economy would be profited more by this action. Although science and history are used with many jobs, math and reading/language are used more. Even if a student grows up and never gets a job, they will still use math and reading/language every day. I am all about what profits students the most. I feel that more emphasis should be placed in history and science if a middle school or high school student is going to pursue a profession in history or science. If students do not wish to obtain a degree in history or science, they should have to concentrate harder on math and reading/language. Although many may not agree with me, this is the way that I have felt since I was in middle school.

I agree that math and english are essential subjects in school. However, a teacher can combine english with history if needed. Science is too essential in my opinion to cut down in time. I can see the need for almost every subject but I can also see the fact that english and math are basic for any educational or occupational success.
I agree that if you don't have reading/math skills you will not excell in other subjects; however, I do think that you have to allot a sufficient amount of time for science/social studies.
I agree that reading and math should be taught more, but the other subjects are important. You can teach math and use dates in history or teach english and have the students reight a letter to Abraham Lincoln. You can integrate other subjects into reading and math.
I honestly agree with you on this subject because of how you said that in grade school these subjects are so important and that is completely true. We use math and reading everyday in our lives and even though I do not like math very much, I am grateful and can do basic math skills that I need. I also think these to subject are simply bases to the other subjects and no matter how much you may teach history and science, they will not be able to understand without basic math and reading skills.
Here's the way I feel about your subject. I agree that more time should be focussed on those two subjects, but I don't think that time should be taken away from history and science in the lower levels of education. Here's why.
If a student in grade school recieves a less than stellar education in the fields of science and history, what is the likelyhood that they would even be interested in these subjects? However, if Language Arts and Math are the focus in our classroom, students are more likely to pursue a field in something they are familiar with. Therefore, I would suggest a balance of all subjects until high school. Slightly more time alotted for math and English, of course. But when you get down to it, Math and English are the only two subjects that are taught to our children through all 13 (now 14 with Pre-K) years of school. How much time in these subjects does a kid need. Just a thought.
Good point with your blog. I agree and disagree at the same time...way to go. That is a difficult reaction to get from me.
I agree with you because in grade school these subjects ARE so important.MAth and reading is an everyday part of our lives and so we need these skills. Like Colleen said "These to subject are simply bases to the other subjects" without the basics of reading, writing, etc. How would we studying anything?
I agree. Math and Language arts are the most essential subjects for grade school children. If you mold a child's mind in these subjects long enough and early enough, they will retain the knowledge later in life.
I agree that math and reading/language are the most important, because they are pretty much the blueprint of education. If you can’t read, you can’t do any of the other subjects, and science involves a lot of math. I think reading/language should be the focus, but the other subjects should be taught. The schools are starting programs where the kids take a home a library book and take a test on it in a week. I think that it’s a good change…I agree with you that they are the most important.
I agree with you that math and language arts are important, but also like most people I think that it should be balanced out with other subjects. You could still put implement math and language arts in other subjects, especially in science. Math is very important to most fields of Science, and language arts can be implemented in any subject by having the students write papers.
I do believe they should all be introduced with equal importance. History and science appeal to students as well as others. I do agree that reading, language and math are very important to every day life, but you can't put the others on the back burner.
I agree and disagree. Math and English are very essential in the development of a student BUT to know "How a tree grows?" or "How many President's have been assassinated?" is just as important in my book. Students must learn about the past and look towards the future. Right now our country is enduring an economic crisis like similar to the Great Depression. If our teachers had believed that Math and English were more significant than History and Science we would not now what the economic crisis is or what to compare it too.
I do agree with you because it seems that every where you go, no matter what job you get you with be doing so kind of reading or math. I feel that these subjects are more important. History is important but not as important. I think that if you get the math and reading in history will fall in place.
You have a good point but I don't totally agree. I feel PE should be given everyday like how it was when I went to school. All to some degree are equally as important.
I agree that reading and math are both important subjects, but I also feel that other subjects are also important for students to learn about. I feel that time should be balanced between the classes.
I agree that math and english are important subjects. However, teachers need to make these subjects more interesting, less boring. This can be done by bringing other subjects such as science and social studies into the mix.
I understand stressing the importance of basic math concepts, reading, and language. These two subjects areas are the foundations for learning other subject areas used across the curriculm. If time is an issue perhaps intregrating math with science would help balance out the curriculm. I feel that all subject areas are as much as important as another.
I agree those to subjects are important but you can't take time away from history and science, students need to learn from history because it is repeating, and science well kids need to know how there bodies work and how to take care of themselves. Each subject needs the same time for the student to be well rounded.
I agree that math and reading are very important subjects, I think these are the basics to be able to understand the other subjects. All subjects together can make a student succeed in whatever field they choose to go into.
This is not a bad idea. Most life experience and jobs deal with math and language more. I also feel like all subjects are important to give students a chance to see what intrigues them. The most imoportant subjects should be alloted more time than like art, music, and gym. These are fun and easy subjects anyway. It would be interesting to see the effects of having some subjects longer than others.
Math and reading is very important but I don't think it should take away from any other subject. There are many different ways you can combine subjects together so that you don't have to take away from anything. Children need to be teached on everything equally so that they can find what they really have a passion for.
I feel you can intergrate many subjects into reading, math and language arts. People need to be open to trying new things other than the same old Dick and Jane.
I know that math and reading/language are very important but all subject are very important for a well rounded student. If you were to spend all of your instruction time on just a few subjects the students would completely loose interest in school. Or, at least that is my opinion. :)
